Approaches to Learning: A Visual Guide

For IB MYP and DP students.

Every IB course draws on approaches to learning (ATL) skills. From your MYP subjects and assessments to the Extended Essay, theory of knowledge (TOK) and internal assessments in the DP, understanding these skills, and knowing how to apply them, can help you become a more confident and independent learner.

ATL Skills: A Visual Guide uses clear illustrations, practical strategies and examples to show you what each skill looks like in practice and how you can use it in your own learning.

There are five categories of ATL skills: thinking, communication, social, self-management and research. Each category is colour-coded, making it easy to find the skills and strategies you need. Pages are also clearly labelled to show whether they relate to the MYP, the DP or both programmes.

Inside, you will find:

• Illustrations that bring each skill to life.

• Strategies and examples showing how to apply ATL skills to your work.

• "Try this" activities that give you opportunities to practise each skill.

• Reflection activities to help you think about how you learn and decide what to do next.

• Badges showing which MYP strand or DP area each page relates to.

• IB terminology explained and linked to the MYP and DP.

Use the book to explore individual skills when you need them, or work through it to build a broader set of strategies you can apply across your IB studies.
